May is National Bike Month and we're celebrating by encouraging everyone to experience the joy of bicycling and the power of bicycles to connect communities. Although the traditional Bike to Work Day event won't take place this year, there are still plenty of ways to participate and have fun during Bike Month.

Participate

BTWD2020

Pledge to ride during Bike Month for a chance to win prizes. Additionally, anyone who lives or works in San Mateo County and logs their bicycle trips to wherever (work, errands, exercise, etc.) on the STAR platform  will be automatically entered into weekly raffle drawings.   This promotion runs May 1 through May 31, and four lucky winners will be randomly picked each week to win the following prizes:

  • - bike tire pump & accessories
  • - handlebar bag
  • - bike tool pouch
  • - bike lights & water bottle

Don't forget to document your ride! Take some pictures while you're out on your bicycle and share them with us on social media by mentioning @smcountycommute and using the hashtag #btwd.

For those who collect Bike to Work Day bags, fear not. We're still distributing the popular canvas bags to keep the tradition alive. To pick one up, visit a bike shop near you or (if you live in or near Santa Clara County) swing by an Energizer Station on  Bike to Wherever Day May 21. You can also pick up a bag during Bike to Your Library Day on May 22 or Bike to Your Farmers Market Day.  Get your bag while supplies last!

Presented by MTC, 511.org and Alaska Airlines, the Bay Area Bike Challenge and Bay Area Bike to Work Day encourages local residents to try commuting on two wheels for the first time and celebrates those who bike to work regularly. In addition to MTC (the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area), 511 (MTC’s regional traveler information system) and Alaska Airlines, Bike to Work Day 2020 receives regional support from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), Clear Channel Outdoor, Ride Report and Exodus Travel, as well as from many sponsors at the local level.  Prizes for the Bike Commuter of the Year winners were donated by the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and Mike’s Bikes. This event is made possible through the cooperation of thousands of volunteers, county congestion management agencies, local jurisdictions, local bicycling coalitions and MTC.
